Located on the Chokoloskee Island, in the heart of the 10,000 Islands, you will find the Smallwood Store. The island has been referred to as one of Florida's last frontiers. At the store you will hear the story of pioneers who conquered this intricate area.
The island was first domesticated by humans around 2,000 years ago. The pioneers sought to improve the landscape by implementing a series of mounds and tunnels. The Calusa tribe used them efficiently until their disappearance in the mid-1700's, at which time began an influx of Native Americans who knew how to use the land even more effectively.
The building itself is roughly a century old and has stood the test of time. Even through Hurricane Irma, the building is still in tact.
There is a virtual tour you can access through their website, but I can guarantee an in-person adventure will be even better. Take a trip to Chokoloskee to learn more about the 10,000 Islands.
