The smallest Post Office in the entire United States is located right here in Ochopee! It's 61.3 square feet and was once a simple storage facility for irrigation pipes on a tomato farm. It made the conversion to a post office in 1953 after a fire destroyed the current post office of the region.
The structure has been active and in use since that fire in 1953 as it is also a ticket station for the Railway's bus lines. It serves residents in 3 separate counties. The daily business will often include stamping for tourists and collectors for the famous Ochopee postmark. If you have one of these you are a legend in the stamp collector community! The Wooten family took over the property in 1992 and it hasn't missed a beat with their mailing services.
Its a fascinating place to check out. It's a rare structure in today's world. You must make a visit during your time in Southwest Florida.
