The Myakka River State Park is home to over 17,000 acres of land that was opened to the public in 1941. There are many amenities to be enjoyed at this beautiful natural site. One of the most exciting amenities is the Canopy Walk. It stretches over 100 feet and is suspended 25 feet in the air and the tower stands at a whopping 74 feet tall, allowing visitors to view the wildlife and flora of the natural local habitat.
There’s a bird naturalist at the park most days from November - to April, who educates visitors on local birds. There is also a 45 - 60 minute boat road you can take around Upper Myakka Lake. Seating is covered but not enclosed so please be aware you will be outside for this length of time. The landscape attracts a multitude of wetland animals which makes birding, canoeing, fishing, and kayaking easily accessible.
In the park, there are 38.9 miles of looped hiking/biking trails, and 12 miles of designated horse trails (Coggins test is required). If biking, it is recommended to wear a helmet. Maps are available at the Ranger Station. Additionally, there are 2 playgrounds within the park and various restrooms located throughout.
There are 3 campgrounds, totaling 90 campsites with electric hookups. Six primitive campsites may be hiked to. Once there, you’ll find a fire pit and post to hang your belongings. A maximum of four people may be on each site.
